The Center Walk, South Building, and North Buildings are outfitted with stores and are primarily meant for shopping. Then, the Grand Building hosts a hotel while the Business Center Building features meeting rooms, a hospital, and a tent company. As its name suggests, it is like a single city centered on a canal.

Over 100 purveyors of fashion, cuisine, goods, and other unique stores line the floors of Canal City Hakata. While many of the stores are accessible elsewhere, some of these stores cannot be found anywhere else in Kyushu. 

Furniture, household item, and clothing brand MUJI has a store here, and in addition to their usual selections the Canal City Hakata shop also features exclusive goods in their FoundMUJI and IDEE line ups.

Shopping Galore at Hakata Riverain Mall

To those still saying “I want to do more shopping!”, we recommend a visit to the Hakata Riverain Mall, located just 10 minutes away from Canal City Hakata by foot. 

If Canal City Hakata focused primarily on more ordinary and casual shopping, Hakata Riverain Mall features more local Kyushu and Fukuoka based brands and stores.

Stores include the following: Tokineri which sells miscellaneous lifestyle goods and items made in Kyushu and Fukuoka, the French crepe, parfait, and cake shop À Côté de T, Budo no Tane which sells foodstuffs, bowls, and clothing (including kimonos), and PG Gauze based out of Akitsuki in Asakura city selling gauze fabric items that are soft to the touch. 

Heading outside one will find the British Pub Morris Hippo which features a comfy terrace overlooking the river, as well as many other food, clothing, and lifestyle stores from Fukuoka. 

There are also facilities for both children and adults to enjoy, such as Kyushu's only Anpanman Children's Museum and the adjacent Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, so if time permits we definitely recommend giving them a visit!
