From Onsen Ryokan to Spa Bath Houses! Where to Enjoy Fukuoka’s Hot Springs
In Japan onsen, or hot springs, are synonymous with relaxation and refreshment. Setting foot inside the hot water provides release from the humdrum of the day-to-day. Did you know? There are actually many natural (as opposed to artificially heated) hot springs right here within Fukuoka City! In this article we will be introducing several of the city’s most accessible natural hot spring locations.
An island resort accessible by ferry! Kyukamura Shikanoshima
To get to Shikanoshima, head to the Hakata Wharf passenger terminal and ride the ferry for roughly 30 minutes. From the dock in Shikanoshima it’s a 10-minute shuttle bus ride away to reach the Kyukamura resort. Alternatively, since Shikanoshima is connected to the mainland by the thin strip of coast known as Uminonakamichi, it is possible to make the trip by train and bus (with some transfers).
With the outdoor bath tub facing out onto the Genkai Sea, bathers can take in some truly magnificent views of the sea and setting sun from the comfort of the onsen. All of the guest rooms face out towards the sea as well! As you can enjoy the starry night sky from the bath, we also recommend the spending the night at the hotel. As Shikanoshima is surrounded by the sea, meaning there is also a wide variety of exceptionally fresh seafood to choose from. Even with this resort-like feel the establishment is not too far away from the city center; one of the distinct advantages of Fukuoka’s proximity to nature.

A popular business hotel near Hakata Station!
Yaoji Hakata Hotel
Yaoji Hakata Hotel is located 5 minutes away from the Hakata Exit of Hakata station by foot, and features both a natural hot spring and sauna on its premises. During the hotel’s construction in 1998, a promising source of spring water for use in the onsen was discovered 1257 meters underground. At the time this was the first source of hot spring water that was unearthed for that kind of common use in Fukuoka so its discovery created a lot of buzz. Single rooms are 16.9 square meters, and standard doubles are 19, making these rooms quite spacious by business hotel standards. For visitors who do not have time to do sightseeing, taking a dip in the onsen could be a very worthwhile use of time. Do note however that weekends are often busy so we recommend making reservations in advance.

A ryokan hotel for onsen lovers!
Hakata Onsen Ryokan Fuji no En
Ride the Nishitetsu bus for roughly 30 minutes to Wada and then walk for 7 minutes through a quiet residential district before arriving at Fuji no En. The story goes that the land the ryokan was built on was originally a rice paddy, and one day farmers realized that one area of the rice crop grew faster than the others. Upon digging to find the cause, out came hot spring water! Ever since the hotel’s opening in 1972, onsen lovers from all over have been coming to stay at the there. The water content features radon, which is quite rare for Fukuokan hot springs, and a tinge of sulphur too. Onsen connoisseurs often recommend the bathtub in specific. The reason why is because that one of the bathtubs offers the most direct and unfiltered connection to the natural spring water underground. Once you entering the water bubbling with sulphur you can truly feel the blessings of the earth. Of course, lodging is available, but since day-trip bathing is allowed the locals use the hotel as if it were a public bathhouse.

Popular With Experts: the 49-degree water at Hakata Onsen Ganso Motoyu
Roughly 35 minutes away from Hakata Station by a combination of bus and train. Get off at Nishitetsu bus stop Yokote 4-chome and walk for 3 minutes to arrive at Hakata Onsen Ganso Motoyu which is tucked away in a tranquil neighborhood. At a glance the building seems like any other private home, but upon closer inspection one can find the words 元湯 (Motoyu) written there. The previous generation owner was said to have found the onsen spring when digging for a well in that very spot. The onsen is particularly loved by the elderly in the area, who love the high heat of the water. This water is not cycled at all, so what comes out is the undiluted hot spring water- 49.0 degrees Celsius to be exact!
The operating hours of this onsen are short, only 13:00 until 18:00, and only 3~4 people can enter the bath at a time. The onsen does not offer complementary shampoo or soap either. With this onsen, rather than settle down and relax, we recommend socializing with the locals who are usually gregarious and eager to chat. On the second floor there is a free rest area fitted with tatami mat flooring. Coming here is like going back to the traditional Japanese home you never knew you had.
