Canal City Hakata

When discussing the best shopping spots in Fukuoka, chances are Canal City Hakata will be the first place that comes to mind. Conceived of as a kind of urban theater, it features a canal that runs through its center, hotels and tenant buildings, a plaza, fountain, movie theater, restaurants, and plenty more. It is a very popular place for tourists from abroad.

Tenjin Underground Mall

天神地下街(2009)

Rain or shine, you can enjoy your shopping in the Tenjin Underground Mall! Tenjin is Kyushu’s largest downtown district and this underground shopping zone runs beneath it from north to south. Inside you will find a passageway designed to be reminiscent of 19th century Europe featuring over 150 vendors of fashion, cuisine, and books among other things. The 590-meter-long underground mall features cobblestone floors, arabesque-patterned ceilings, and stained-glass windows in various places. The clock located by the information square on the Third Street plays a rondo-style rendition of a 15th-century chanson every 30 minutes. See if you can make the time to go check it out!

Sadaharu Oh Baseball Museum

The [Sadaharu Oh Baseball Museum], where the spirit of baseball blazes brightly, is divided into two areas. The first portion of the museum is the Sadaharu Oh History Zone, which exhibits valuable photos and other materials, allowing visitors to experience the greatness of the athlete and the sport. The second portion of the museum is 89 Park, where Oh's passion for baseball is condensed into a hands-on attraction. Visitors can enjoy various challenges such as hitting, throwing, and catching.。

This new museum made by world renowned art collective teamLab is comprised of two parts: the “Catching and Gathering Forest” and “Moving Forest”. Fukuoka City Science Museum Dome Theater (Planetarium)

Located on the 6th floor of the museum is a 220-seat dome theater, or planetarium. With the largest diameter of any planetarium on Kyushu at 25 meters, the 3D digital surround system allows you to experience an amazing sense of depth and realism.

Fukuoka City Art Museum

田中千智《生きている壁画》

The Fukuoka City Art Museum was designed by none other than the architectural maestro Maegawa Kunio. In 2019 the building was renovated and reopened, and now features art by Dali, Basquiat, and a wide variety of artists both ancient, modern, and from Japan and abroad. With all of this art it’s easy to find something you will enjoy. On the 2nd floor Kabocha, a sculpture by famed artist Kusama Yayoi, greets you as you enter.

Fukuoka City Museum

In the Fukuoka City Museum one of Japan’s national treasures, The Golden Seal, can be found! The Golden Seal is an artefact that is one of the first historically recorded examples of Japan being referred to as a nation almost 2,000 years ago. Other famous artifacts including the famous Nihon-go Spear can be found here, making this an excellent place for those who want to learn more about Fukuoka itself.

Enjoy the Aquarium!

Marine World Uminonakamichi

A beautiful aquarium built in the shape of a clam shell. In spring of 2024 the area was reborn as the “Kaiju Island”. Here you can see penguins and seals close up. The show pool, with Hakata Bay as a backdrop, has stays on the audience side, where you can enjoy the energetic sea lion and dolphin shows. Enjoy another side to Kyushu, hidden underwater.
