This year Hakata, the City of Light shines brightly together with Super Mario!

Mario is coming to Hakata Station! “Hakata, City of Light・Happy Holidays in Hakata with Super Mario” is a collaborative light-up event that is bringing Nintendo’s beloved mascot to the yearly Christmas light decorations in front of Hakata Station. A prologue to the gentle light that will come to cover the entirety of the city, the Gate of Light and the 30 glowing blue trees of the Forest of Light welcome visitors. 

This year features a special collaboration with Super Mario!

This year on the 14.9-meter-tall symbolic tree, a holiday design based Super Mario will feature characters and items as decorative ornaments. These same characters will also make an appearance on the must-see LED Sky Walk as well!  

Within JR Hakata City there will also be a Super Mario Holiday Spot as well, featuring tons of characters and items designed for the holiday season.

Highlights

At the Hakata, City of Light・Happy Holidays in Hakata with Super Mario event, there are plenty of highlights to take in throughout the area!

★ Super Mario Holiday Spot (JR Hakata City)

① Symbol Tree
Standing at 14.9 meters tall, the symbol tree features items and characters from the Super Mario franchise. This is arguably the major highlight of the event!

② LED Sky Walk
With a width of 5 meters and length of 70 meters, this moving LED screen features characters and items from the Super Mario franchise as well. Watch as popular characters and items move overhead!

・JR Hakata City Holiday Spot
There will be a Super Mario themed holiday spot within JR Hakata City as well. For more information, please consult the map on the official Hakata, City of Light page.

③ Stardust Wave
The “Stardust Wave” is meant to resemble a tapestry of stars in the night sky. The many lights of affixed to the outdoor plaza’s roof glitter and glimmer, with each single light combining to form a meaningful whole.

④ Christmas Market in Hikari no Machi HAKATA
Enjoy traditional mulled wine, cuisine, and goods specific to the holiday season. There will be musical performances in the market every evening for the duration of the event.

⑤ The Gate of Light
In 2023 this new attraction was set up as a kind of gateway to the illuminations. Newcomers and visitors who haven’t been to Fukuoka in a while will likely be greeted by this new scenery!

⑥ Wish Bouquet 
The base of the zelkova tree surrounding the “Wish Flower” will be decorated for the occasion. 

⑦ The Forest of Light
In the plaza there are 30 trees that will be illuminated with blue lights, serving as a kind of prologue to the rest of the light-up. Their combined light bathes the area in a gentle glow. 

⑧ Wish Flower
A flower blooming in the “Forest of Light” will make your dreams and wishes come true. Make a wish as you approach it!

⑨ Flower Tiara
Lights are arranged to resemble a floral tiara. The petals that comprise it represent the connection between people. 

⑩ Curtain of Light
A symphony playing in the sky. The wave of fluctuating lights creates a synchronized performance overhead.
