From Saturday, September 14, 2024 - Permanent exhibition

Internationally renowned modern artist Mona Hatoum first unveiled this work in Fukuoka in 1994, and now her representative work “+ and –“, has been selected to be on permanent display at the Fukuoka City Art Museum. This work, created specifically for the Fukuoka City Art Museum, will be displayed in the Collection Display Room starting from September 14th (Saturday). Then on the same day FaN Week (Fukuoka Art Next Week) will be kicked off with a discussion featuring the artist herself.

Regarding the Piece
“+ and –“  1994/2024/stainless steel, mortar, sand/diameter of 404cm

This piece is comprised of a round container roughly 4 meters in diameter and filled with sand. Atop the sand is a serrated bar that impresses a pattern in the sand on one side, while the other half erases what it has made. The piece is themed on the often-contradictory relationship of opposing forces: existence and non-existence, life and death, hope and despair, exploitation and liberation, etc.
