Dates:13 Sep 2024 - 04 Nov 2024

In Fukuoka City, there is an area that displays gigantic lanterns called "Otoro" during its summer festival. These lanterns are adorned with striking images, measuring approximately 2 meters by 4 meters, depicting warriors or scenes from folklore. These are known as "Otoroe" (Large Lantern Paintings).

For the first time several of these pieces, including those designated as Fukuoka Prefecture’s tangible folk cultural properties such as the “Ohama Stream Initiation Grand Lantern”, lost works we only have photographic evidence of, and even stories pertaining to the artists of these giant lantern paintings will be brought together in a special exhibit.
