Big news! The first kabuki of its kind to make its way to the big screen! A performance starring two different actors in the main role of “Rai”. Matsumoto Koshiro will be starring from 1/2, and Onoe Matsuya will be starring from 1/23! 

Bringing tradition and modernity together, Kabuki NEXT’s highly awaited second installment will be “Kabuki NEXT: Lord of the Lies” but with a twist—it will be shown at the movie theaters! 

Cinema kabuki is a relatively new genre of kabuki theater started in 2005 in which kabuki plays are screened in movie theaters instead of being performed on stage. This comes with some unique advantages: viewers can see the expressions of the kabuki actors from a different perspective, the exquisite embroidery work in the costumes is also more clearly visible, and the sound design possible on the big screen helps create an ambiance different from stage performances. As of today, over 40 different kabuki plays have been made in this way.

Matsumoto Koshiro and Onoe Matsuya both throw themselves into their performances as Rai, a nefarious protagonist which takes inspiration from William Shakespeare’s Richard the Third and Macbeth plays. Rai, a man totally subsumed by his ambitions, manipulates those around him using sly words and crafty stratagems, all with an eye towards acquiring the throne in this grand yet human tale. Will he arrive there in a flash of glory? Or is his quest for splendor destined to come to ruin? Traditional kabuki flourishes and a modern dramatic and speedy sense come together in this unforgettable performance. 

Kabuki is a traditional Japanese performing art with over 400 years of experience. In it, storytelling, music, dance, and aesthetic design come together with virtually all roles, including female characters, performed by men. Audacious performances, colorful performances, and theatrical elocution continue to fascinate audiences far and wide.
