Coming back to Hakata Port this year is one of Fukuoka’s beloved winter pastimes—the oyster hut! Here for a limited time, the huts are in the convenient Bayside area, easily accessed from both Tenjin and Hakata. The scent of freshly grilled seafood and the gentle breeze from the sea make oyster huts a favorite among locals, who eagerly await the coming of winter for this reason.

1. Must-try: gangan yaki

Gangan yaki refers to a type of grilling in which a variety of different seafood is placed inside of a can, then placed directly on top of the flame to steam the ingredients within. The special course on offer at the Bayside oyster hut event additionally takes the remaining stock in the can and makes a delicious rice porridge with it (separate charge required)—the perfect way to cap off the seafood feast! Of course, you can still enjoy grilled oysters as well, so please eat to your heart’s content!

2. A wide variety of delicious ingredients to choose from

In addition to oysters one can also select from a wide variety of marine delicacies, including Japanese tiger shrimp and clams, as well as fresh scallops and surf clams from Hokkaido. These ingredients are shipped directly from Hokkaido and are incredibly fresh! For those seeking something other than seafood, there are also plenty of meats and fried options to choose from. There’s something for everybody to enjoy at the grill!
