Jotenji Night Market: Explore the Birthplace of Udon and Soba at the Atmospheric Jotenji Night Market
A special night market will be held at Jotenji Temple, known as the birthplace of Hakata's noodle culture and Hakata-ori textiles. The temple is closely associated with the origins of Hakata's culinary heritage, including udon and soba noodles, as well as manju (traditional steamed buns).
As darkness falls, the illuminated temple grounds take on a tranquil and dreamlike atmosphere, quite different from their daytime appearance. Visitors can enjoy warming seasonal treats such as udon, soba, and zenzai (sweet red bean soup with mochi rice cakes), while browsing Hakata-ori products that make memorable souvenirs. This year, a seating area will be available in front of the Buddha Hall, providing a relaxing place to take a break and admire the beautifully lit temple grounds at a leisurely pace.
Admission is free, and the event takes place on the same dates as Okushida Fes at nearby Kushida Shrine, making it an ideal stop during an evening stroll through Hakata Old Town.
A bowl of noodles enjoyed at their birthplace offers a deeper appreciation of Hakata's culinary heritage.
Admission: Free
