Fukuoka Tower Tanabata Illumination: 150 Meters of Light, The Milky Way

Fukuoka Tower will become a glowing symbol of one of Japan’s beloved summer traditions, Tanabata. Come for the lights, stay for the Tanabata Festival that will be held in the southern plaza!

Starting on June 13th, Fukuoka Tower will be illuminated in celebration of Tanabata. Tanabata is a Japanese holiday that commemorates the once-a-year meeting of deities Orihime and Hikoboshi, who are normally separated by the Milky Way, and only allowed to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. Inside the building there will be special photo spots made of wind chimes, and even a face cutout stand with a yamakasa motif!

Additionally, from July 5th (Saturday) until July 7th (Monday), a Tanabata festival will be held in the southern plaza in front of the tower. Here, you will find popular yatai/fair food such as candied apples and yakisoba, in addition to special entertainment including a performance featuring a trained monkey!

Milky Way Illumination

A distinct symbol of Japanese summers, the tower will feature an illumination depicting the Milky Way. At times a shooting star will race across the surface, so make sure not to miss it!

Illumination period: June 13th (Friday) ~ July 7th (Monday)
Illumination time: 19:30 ~ 23:00

Heart Illumination

A special heart-themed illumination is also scheduled to make its appearance and will depict the reunion of Orihime and Hikoboshi.

Illumination period: July 5th (Saturday) ~ July 7th (Monday)
Illumination time: Every 30 minutes starting from 20:00 ~ 22:30. *On July 7th, the 21:00 show will begin at 21:10 instead.

*LED light replacement will be carried out during the show, but there should be no visible impacts on either of the illuminations.

Tanabata Wish Corner

At the tower’s observation deck close to the stars, you will be able to decorate a corner with tanzaku, or long vertical strips of paper on which you can write your wishes. At night the area is illuminated by bamboo lanterns, creating a mystical atmosphere.
The written wishes will then be transferred to the tutelary shrine of the Sawara ward, Momoji Hachimangu, where they will be blessed to ensure their fulfillment.
