Fukuoka is the gateway to Japan's Kyushu region and the region’s largest city. The well-developed transportation system includes railways, air travel, express buses, and ferries, making Fukuoka a key transportation hub. Access to the city is easy from anywhere in Japan. Flights from Tokyo take 1 hour and 35 minutes. From Osaka, flights take 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the bullet train takes 2 hours and 28 minutes. International direct flights are available from various locations in Asia, such as South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. A flight from Seoul takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Fukuoka Airport is a convenient mid-sized airport located in an easily accessible location, just six minutes from Hakata Station and ten minutes from Tenjin in the center of the city. A free shuttle bus to the domestic terminal building is available. Regular flights operate from major cities throughout Japan, such as Sapporo, Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka.
Many international airlines operate direct or connecting flights to Fukuoka. Direct flights run from major locations throughout Asia, including South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Fukuoka Airport is an urban airport located close to the center of the city, making it easy to travel to various regions in Kyushu. The domestic terminal connects to the subway, allowing for easy access to all parts of Fukuoka City. There is also a shuttle bus available from the international terminal to the domestic terminal (10 minutes).

Fukuoka is easy to access from various parts of Kyushu as well as from Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo by express train or bullet train. Hakata Station, the largest railway station in Kyushu, is a central hub for train transportation in Fukuoka. Using the bullet train, you can reach Fukuoka from Osaka in 2 hours and 28 minutes, or from Tokyo in 4 hours and 52 minutes. From Kagoshima, Kumamoto, or Nagasaki, travel times range from 32 minutes (Kumamoto) to about 1 hour and 30 minutes (Kagoshima, Nagasaki). The JAPAN RAIL PASS can be used on almost all JR lines to Hakata. It is easy to transfer from Hakata Station to the subway or bus to visit the city's tourist spots.

Highway buses provide convenient access to Fukuoka City. Many transportation companies, including Nishitetsu, operate from major cities in western Japan as well as other regions, including within Kyushu. Some long-distance routes, such as from Osaka and Tokyo, offer overnight sleeper buses. The travel time from Tokyo is about 14 hours, and from Osaka it is about 8 hours.
The main highway bus terminals in Fukuoka are Hakata Bus Terminal, Nishitetsu Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal, and the Fukuoka Airport International Terminal, from which many buses come and go to and from various areas in Kyushu. Tickets can be purchased online, by phone, or at the bus terminal or ticket counters.
The Port of Hakata has domestic and international terminals, and there is a route connecting Fukuoka to Busan, South Korea. The international route is served by JR KYUSHU JET FERRY and Camellia Line. Travel time varies depending on the operating company and weather conditions, but it is approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes.
Many international cruise ships make port calls at the Port of Hakata. Disembarking is also easy, and you can access the city of Fukuoka quickly using public transportation. It takes about 15 minutes by taxi from the port to Hakata Station or Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station. From the Hakata Port International Terminal bus stop, a five-minute walk from the port, buses run to Tenjin in 13 minutes or to Hakata Station in 17 minutes. Please note that buses only accept cash or IC cards as payment. Credit cards are not accepted.
