East Area | History & Culture Kashiigu Shrine
Enshrines emperor Chuai, empress Jingu, the mother of emperor Oujin, and the Sumiyoshi Daijin (three Shinto gods). The shrine was built by empress Jingu to console the soul of emperor Chuai who died during his journey in the west. Kashii flourished as a trade port after the decline of Korokan (International reception hall) trade which took place in Hakata. During the Mongolian invasion, Otomo-shi, a family from the Bungo province defended the Tatara and Kashii district, and eventually gains control over this area. The main shrine has a unique architectural style called "Kashii style", and is designated as a national important cultural property. Near the shrine is a fountain of furosui (immortal water) which was regularly drank by Takenouchi no Sukune, and a big pine tree planted by emperess Jingu. Every year, yabusame (Japanese archery on horseback) is demonstrated during the big autumn festival, and in June, about 5000 iris flowers bloom in the pond.
