Shikanoshima Island is famous around the country for the kin-in or gold seal excavated on the island. The seal, a National Treasure of Japan, is said to have been given by an emperor of China of the time, and is an evidence of the area’s history as an important base of exchange with mainland Asia. The attractions of the island include the Kin-in Park and a monument of a manyo poem, and is gaining popularity as one of Fukuoka’s resorts blessed with sparkling sea and beautiful nature. Visitors enjoy marine leisure and sports such as swimming, yachting and windsurfing, as well as fresh seafood available at various eateries on the island. During the day, the Shiomi observatory commands a panoramic view of the islands that dot the Genkai Sea and, at night, the brilliant view of Fukuoka Tower and the city.
