Hakata-ori has a history of approximately 780 years, and the design patterns presented to the Shogunate by the Chikuzen Kuroda feudal lord are still used today. Hakata Dolls are said to have originated about 400 years ago, when many tile craftsmen were brought to Chikuzen by the Kuroda.

Other traditional crafts include Hakata Magemono (Wood Sheet Bending), Hakata Scissors, Hakata Hariko, martigrass, Hakata Spinning Top, Hakata Okiage and Imajuku Dolls.
