The Best Transportation Methods for Enjoying Shikanoshima

Shikanoshima is the island where the national treasure, The Golden Seal, was discovered, making it famous nationwide. Besides this, the island has been the site of trade and exchange with mainland Asia and one can feel the history throughout its varied landscape. The island is blessed with natural beauty ranging from pristine coastlines to spectacular views, and even onsen hot springs that overlook the lapping waves. To access the island, it takes roughly 30 minutes to get there from the ferry that departs from Bayside Place Hakata’s Hakats Wharf Terminal 1#. Once getting to Shikanoshima, there are then several ways to get around that will enhance your experience of the island.

The Shikanoshima Bus Route

The Shikanoshima bus route runs between the town of Saitozaki and Shikanoshima’s very own resort town area in Katsuma. This bus stops both at the Golden Seal Park and the Mongolian Mound, a place where the graves of several Mongolians who were killed here during one of the failed invasions of Japan occurred. We recommend this method of transportation for those curious in enjoying what’s on offer in the resort town area and Katsuma coastline (including the onsen) as well as for those who are visiting on a rainy day.

The best way to get on this bus is from the Shikanoshima bus stop that is directly outside the ferry station that comes from Hakata.
