Hakataza was born from the desire to revive Fukuoka as a place where the theatrical arts could flourish, as the city once prided itself on its many playhouses. Residents clamored for a place where they could watch legitimate Japanese performing arts, and Hakataza was incorporated into plans for the redevelopment of the Shimokawabata area. This coordinated effort by the government, businesses, and world of entertainment resulted in the creation of Hakataza, Japan’s first privately managed but publicly established theater in 1999.

Far from being limited to kabuki, Hakataza has staged a wide variety of genres including musicals, all-female shows by the Takarazuka Revue, and performances by well-known vocalists, with the total number of spectators exceeding 10 million people in 2019. Hakataza has become an institution and chief representative of culture in Hakata.
