Fukuoka’s Quiet Evolution — A New Destination City Offering Diverse Experiences
Fukuoka is one of Japan’s largest and fastest-growing cities. In recent years, a wide range of new facilities has opened across the city.
In the downtown area, long-term stay and “workation” accommodations are on the rise, while just outside the city, immersive nature experiences offer a different way to explore Fukuoka. This article showcases the city’s current offerings, which meet diverse travel needs—from luxurious stays to more active experiences.
ONE FUKUOKA BLDG.
Located in Fukuoka’s central Tenjin district, at the crossing of Meiji-dori and Wantanabe-dori, ONE FUKUOKA BLDG. opened in April 2025 as part of Tenjin BIG BANG, a city-led initiative that aims to modernize and energize the area’s downtown core through urban redevelopment. Tenjin’s new centerpiece signals Fukuoka’s ambition to become a city for the future—one that draws travelers, entrepreneurs, and locals into the same environment.
The property is a large-scale complex building with 19 floors above ground and 4 below, including everything from a luxury hotel and rooftop lounge to co-working spaces and a wide array of dining and retail venues—all directly connected to Tenjin Station, just a 11-minute subway ride away from Fukuoka Airport.
The lower floors of ONE FUKUOKA BLDG. showcase some 130 shops and restaurants, many of which are making their debut in Kyushu. The 6th floor is home to the light-drenched SKY LOBBY SQUARE co-working space, whose two-story-high ceiling overlooks panoramic views of the city, as well as Fukuoka’s local REC COFFEE shop. Just upstairs, CIC Fukuoka innovation hub incubates startups from around the world.
ONE FUKUOKA HOTEL
Perched on the top 18th and 19th floors of ONE FUKUOKA BLDG., the high-rise ONE FUKUOKA HOTEL brings resort-style comfort to downtown Tenjin.
Guest rooms feature wide terraces and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame views of the city and Hakata Bay, while the hotel’s boutique interior expresses the understated elegance of modern Japanese design. The premises include a large public bath and sauna, a 24-hour fitness room, a laid-back library lounge with complimentary coffee and sweets, and an open-air garden terrace. When you’re ready to move on from pre-dinner mimosas at ONE FUKUOKA HOTEL’s chic rooftop bar, its WAN STEAK HOUSE restaurant specializes in teppanyaki using locally sourced ingredients from across Kyushu.
This seamless blending of art and hospitality was recognized with the World Luxury Hotel Award in 2025.
All set inside ONE FUKUOKA BLDG., the hotel is directly connected to Fukuoka City Subway Tenjin Station through a large underground shopping mall, so guests are seamlessly linked to central Fukuoka and beyond.
CIC Fukuoka
On the 7th floor, below the resident offices, CIC Fukuoka brings the spirit of innovation from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to the beating heart of Kyushu. Part of Cambridge Innovation Center’s (CIC) global network, this sleek 3,600-square-meter facility is the organization’s second campus in Japan, with the first located in Tokyo.
CIC’s mission is to support the growth of startups globally and foster a community where entrepreneurs, investors, and companies from around the world can share ideas, build partnerships, and turn concepts into reality. The hub includes 143 private offices, a co-working space with 40 shared desks, 17 meeting rooms—one of which is a soundproof room for podcast recording—16 phone booths, and bilingual staff. It’s an ideal place for those doing business in Fukuoka to hold face-to-face meetings in a chic setting, while providing flexible workspaces, offering use of a business mailing address, on-site support, and access to an ever-growing community of like-minded people.
The Millennials Fukuoka
Located on Nakasu, a small island between the Naka and Hakata rivers, The Millennials Fukuoka reimagines the capsule hotel experience. Its 114 SmartPods are uniquely designed with high ceilings, 25cm-thick Serta mattresses, electric bed recliners, built-in storage, and smart device integration. The TheaterPod also includes a personal movie projector that you can control from your laptop or smartphone.
Roughly one-fifth of the hotel is dedicated to common areas: a 24-hour lounge, co-working space with billiard tables, and complimentary beer served every evening (17:30〜18:30) at the ground-floor main bar.
This is one place where your smartphone becomes a magic wand. In addition to various room controls, you can use it for mobile check-in/check-out, payment, to rent various amenities or chat directly with hotel staff.
Just steps from Nakasu-Kawabata Station in the heart of Hakata’s entertainment district, The Millennials Fukuoka provides easy access to the rest of the city and a front-row seat to Fukuoka’s riverside nightlife—where yatai stalls, bars, and restaurants are waiting just around the corner.
FOREST ADVENTURE ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA
Less than a 30-minute drive from central Fukuoka, FOREST ADVENTURE ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA offers the opportunity to trade the city skyline for treetop views. Opened in January 2024, the park brings a new kind of adventure to Fukuoka, inviting visitors of all ages to explore the forest from above.
Since FOREST ADVENTURE first launched FOREST ADVENTURE Mt. Fuji in 2006, it now has over 40 parks across Japan, each offering unique ways for visitors to immerse themselves in nature. FOREST ADVENTURE ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA takes you above the trees, whether it’s climbing on giant nets suspended up to 8 meters above ground where you can freely jump, play, or just lie down (no harness required), or gliding high above the forest floor on an elevated zip line stretching more than 100 meters above the canopy.
There’s also a campsite located right next door, so you can easily extend your visit into a full day and night of outdoor adventure fun.
No matter what brings you here, Fukuoka has a way of making every traveler feel welcome. And as the city continues to evolve, so do the possibilities for discovering your own way to experience it.
