How to Spend a Spring Day at Fukuoka’s Premier Forest Camp [ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA]

The chill of winter is thawing, the flowers are blooming, and the spring sun has begun to shine. With its varied colors and floral flair, this is truly the best season to go camping! If any of you ever felt “I’m not very used to camping but would love to give it a try!” or “Last year I wasn’t able to spend time outdoors much so this year is a must!”, then this article is for you!

To travelers seeking a comfortable outdoor experience we recommend checking the comprehensive camping facility known as “ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA”. Access is easy with it taking 30 minutes to get to the facility, located on Mount Aburayama, by car. There is plenty for everybody to enjoy, from panoramic views of the city, horseback riding near the camp sight, and even opportunities to milk the cows that graze there.

This article will introduce all of this and more. Now, onward to “ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA”, where the brisk spring breeze blows!

Restaurant Sola

Enjoy the flavor of a Michelin Star establishment! Casual French made with panache

Before heading off to camp, let us take the opportunity to savor the flavor of a chef and restauranteur who received a Michelin Star for his cuisine… in Paris! At this restaurant many ingredients are sourced directly from Mt. Aburayama, ensuring their freshness in these innovative and tantalizingly delicious dishes. The view from the restaurant’s terrace is replete with the greenery of trees and new verdure, and enhances the inherent flavor of the cuisine. Surely this is a reason for your taste buds to rejoice.

The beef and chicken pascade come particularly recommended here. Pascade is the name of a traditional cuisine from Aveyron in the south of France, and it is comprised of a wheat-based vessel for a variety of fresh ngredients. The light texture and uncomplicated rusticity of the flavors fits the natural environment to a tee, the pascade are both easy to eat and showcase local flavors. There are also a variety of other tasty dishes on offer, ranging from potato churros with a tangy sour cream accompaniment and chicken wings smoked with Sakura woodchips.

There are visitors to ABURYAMA FUKUOKA who come solely to partake of Restaurant Sola’s flavors. Having said that, please make sure to not eat too much. We wouldn’t want to fill up too much before heading out to the campsite!

Mori no Kiosk (Forest Kiosk)

Home to THE Aburayama soft serve

The Mori no Kiosk, or Forest Kiosk, is the place to go if you realize you’re missing any ingredients, spices, or anything else you might require prior to your foray into nature. Like a conbini (convenience store) for campers, they sell soft drinks, alcohol, and other camping necessities.

The must-try item here is the soft serve ice cream. This is an item that has been made at Aburayama for many years, even prior to the renewal and reopening of the camping facilities last year. As a much beloved fixture of the Aburayama experience, we recommend raising your ice cream cup to the sky in one hand as you snap a photo of it with the other.

A soft serve is the perfect companion to the gentle sunlight of spring. Why not treat yourself as you set up your tent after lunch?

Milking Cows

A valuable opportunity to milk cows in the city

Prior to ABURYAMA FUKUOKA’s opening, “Mo-Mo Land” was the place to go for Fukuokans who wanted to meet and interact with animals. Couples, families, and friends alike made lasting memories together with the animals onsite. Today this practice still continues on what is Kyushu’s largest pasture for tourism with 70 to 80 cows on the premises.

Even in the new Aburayama the cows are still available for the milking activity. This is an excellent opportunity both for children and for adults who wish to feel that same sense of childlike naivete interacting with animals.

In Fukuoka city there are not many opportunities to come face to face with this many cows at once, so even just getting to see them up close can be fun! Whether or not you decide to milk the cows we recommend stopping by.

Horseback Riding

Try horseback riding with some truly fine horses

Cow milking aside, the horseback riding experience features thoroughbred horses that were once horse racing stars. Parties interested in the backstories of the horses can learn about them from the staff working there.

There are two large horses and two smaller ponies respectively. Keep in mind, that to ride the large horses one needs to be both at least 120 centimeters tall and over 4 years old.

What kind of scenery will we see from atop our equine companion?

As you can see, “ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA” is full of places of fun and learning. The calming presence of horses and other living things in the area makes this a valuable experience, and excellent way to get close to other animals.

Campsite

Build lasting memories of the spring in this well-furnished campground

If anything, camping is the main attraction of Aburayama. There are many different campsites prepared and ready for the prospective camper. Depending on the requested camping style there are sites for campers of all experience levels, solo campers, and even equipment rental services.

Once you’re done setting up, the fun begins! Even those who may not be experienced with camping can come with peace of mind. Forget something? Don’t worry- there is a rental service available. Need help setting up your tent? The staff will help you!

Now, if there’s anything that really says camping, it’s an outdoor barbecue, and with the mild weather of spring there is really no better time to get grilling! The scent of grilled meat, the lively laughter, and the night view from Aburayama… After a long day of fun, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Whether a beginner or an experienced camper, these are the kinds of spring memories that will last a lifetime.

Unscheduled Events

ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA sometimes holds special, unscheduled events. We recommend periodically checking their website and social media account in find out when these may be happening.
