01 Nomiyama Kannonji Temple
Pray before the thousand armed Kannon!
(Sasaguri-machi)

Nicknamed ‘Nomiyama-san,’ Koyasan is the special head temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. The thousand-armed Kannon, a Buddhist statue which is rarely shown to the public, is exhibited for the fall festival in October, and on the famous “8000 Homa” Osame festival which is held once per year. 1,000 maple trees turn the grounds red during the turning of the leaves, which is a must-see.

ACCESS FROM TENJIN
[Car] Get on the Fukuoka Highway Tenjinkita ramp then get off at Kasuya. Take national route 201/prefectural route 92 toward Sasaguri. About 37 minutes
[Bus] It takes approx. 64 minutes from Nishitetsu “Tenjin Chuo Yubinkyoku-mae” on the bus bound for Sasaguri. Get off at “Sasaguri Eki-mae”, and walk for approx. 60 minutes. On the third Sunday of every month, and the festival days throughout the four seasons, there is a shuttle to the temple from JRSasaguri Station.

02 Chiisana Cafe Tuki
Kutsurogi Cafe, in an old Japanese-style house (Sue-machi)

This is a cafe in an old residence at the foot of a mountain, away from the residential area. The cafe has much elegant old furniture. The home-made flavors of the stewed Hamburg steak andpork curry rated highly. Having a chat with the talkative owner is also enjoyable.

The bare joists have the feel of an old-style building. Handmade knick-knacks and sundries are sold in the store

The store has the feel of a hidden away house surrounded by greenery. The warm light in the entrance is soothing. The road leading up to it is narrow, so be careful.

[Car] Get on the Fukuoka Highway Tenjinkita ramp then get off at Kasuya. Take national route 201/prefectural route 35 toward Sue. About 30 minutes
[Train] Approx. 6 minutes from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station to JR Hakata Station on the subway. Take the Kagoshima Line from JR Hakata Station to Kashii Station, then transfer to the Kashii Line; approx. 30 minutes to Sue Station. It is approx. 5 minutes from JR Sue Station by taxi.

03 Umi Hachiman-gu
A power spot to pray for safe birthing and child rearing (Umi-machi)

The shrine is famous for the benefit of safe and easy child birth. There is a custom where you take home a “Safe Childbirth Stone” and after the child is born, you write the child’s name and birth date on a different stone, and bring it back alongside the stone you took home on the baby’s first visit to the shrine.

In the “Kojiki”(lit. Recordsof Ancient Matters), it is written that Empress Jingu gave birth of Emperor Oujin. When facing the Shrine (pictured), there is a large 2,000 year old tree on the right

There are many people who believe in “Safe who Childbirth believe Stones” for having an easy time during childbirth. There are stones around “Yunokata Shrine”, which worships the deity of midwives.

The “Tree of Safe Childbirth,” was said to have been held by Empress Jingu when she gave birth. The tree was thusly names since it was a safe and easy birth.

[Car]Get on the Fukuoka Highway Tenjinkita ramp then get off at Onojo. Take national route 3/prefec- tural route 60 toward Umi. Takes about 28 minutes.
[Train] Approx. 6 minutes from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station to JR Hakata Station on the subway. Take the Kagoshima Line from JR Hakata Station to Kashii Station, then transfer to the Kashii Line; approx. 43 minutes to Umi Station. Walk along Fureai Dori for approx. 5 minutes.
[Bus] Approx. 52 minutes from the Nishitetsu Bus stop “Tenjin/Nichigin-mae” to “Umi Hachiman- mae” You’ll be right there after getting off the bus.

04 Former Shime Mining Shaft Scaffold
A symbol of Shime, an old coal mining town (Shime-machi)

This tower was constructed in 1943 in order to provide a stable source of coal. It is a designated important cultural property, and a valuable part of the history of indestrial technology. This tower design only remains in three locations: Shime, Belgium, and China.

A 47.6 m tall reinforced concrete building. This type of building is called a winding tower; it allowed for the stable production of coal.

Beside the mining shaft, there is an open space with athletic playground equipment. Enjoy the trip alongside your children

[Bus]It is approx. 30 minutes from the Nishitetsu bus from “Tenjin Nichigin-mae” bound for Umi; get off the bus at “Shime”. Walk toward Shime Railway Memorial Park and Shi-mate for approx. 10 minutes

05 Eel and omaze rice: Sansho no Ki
Charcoal grilled seasonal eels! (Kasuya-machi)

The large, thick eels are slowly cooked for a charcoal flame before serving. There is more oil in the fall and winter, which increases the tenderness and umami, and is highly recommended. “Omaze gohan” (mixed rice) with broiled eel is a local specialty, and can be eaten in the same way as Hitsumabushi (a similar dish)
